To operate the wide range of Wi-Fi enabled products there are a number of Wi-Fi Software available. The Wi-Fi Software tools perform functions like Wireless network mapping, Wireless network discovery, Wireless network RF signal strength monitoring, Wireless network encryption cracking and Wireless network custom frame generation. The various operating platforms which use the various Wi-Fi Software include Windows, Linux and Macintosh. Some of the Wi-Fi Software tools are used for multiple platforms such as Aircrack-ng which is a WEP and WPA-PSK key cracking program used for 802.11 networks.

Each of these Wi-Fi Software tools has a specified functional area. While Kismet is an 802.11 Layer 2 wireless network detector and Intrusion Detection System, the BSD-Airtools provides a complete toolset for wireless 802.11b auditing. Other Wi-Fi software like Wellenreiter is a GTK/Perl program which makes the discovery and auditing of 802.11b Wi-Fi wireless networks a lot simpler. On the other hand WEPCrack is a Software tool that cracks 802.11 WEP encryption keys by exploiting the limitations of RC4 key scheduling.

The Wi-Fi Software for Mac OS platform includes MacStumbler, KisMAC and Kismet. The MacStumbler was primarily designed to help find access points while traveling, or to detect problems with wireless network. The other software tool KisMAC is a free stumbler application which puts your card into the monitor mode. Most of these Wi-Fi Software can be downloaded from a number of websites. The Wi-Fi technology has taken the wireless market by storm and an increasing number of devices can now operate through Wi-Fi networks.
