Wi-Fi History
Wi-Fi is one of the latest wireless technologies with the Wi-Fi history dating back to the 1990s. Wi-Fi technology of data transmission through radio channel had been worked out and implemented mostly in local networks of leading corporations and organizations of the US Silicone valley. The Wi-Fi wireless technology was invented by NCR Corporation/AT&T in Nieuwegein in the Netherlands in the year 1991. NCR Corporation/AT&T later came to be known as Lucent & Agere Systems.
Vic Hayes is known as the ‘father of Wi-Fi’ for having invented this wireless technology. Along with his team Vic Hayes was involved in designing standards like IEEE 802.11b, 802.11a and 802.11g. In the beginning Wi-Fi was used to refer to the technology which gave the connection in diapason of 2, 4 and by standard of IEEE 802.11b. All through the Wi-Fi history this technology has undergone a number of changes.

At the time of its inception Wi-Fi technology was designed for cashier systems with the first wireless devices being brought in the market under the name WaveLAN with speeds of 1Mbps/2Mbps. Since the Wi-Fi history, the technology has found its uses and application in a vast range of products. After spending a long tenure at Agere Systems, Vic Hayes retired in the 2003. In spite of creating cutting edge products, Agere Systems faced strong competition in the market. Many other companies were making cheaper solutions and several consumers were opting for cheaper Wi-Fi solutions. Agere Systems planned to quit the Wi-Fi market in late 2004 after their 802.11abg all-in-one chipset (code name: WARP) was never introduced in the market.

In the Wi-Fi history mention must be made of the Wi-Fi Alliance which had been created in 1999. The Wi-Fi Alliance is a group of leading industry leaders who formed a global non-profit organization with the aim of adopting a single worldwide-accepted standard for high-speed wireless local area networking. Earlier the Wi-Fi Alliance was known as the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance. The Alliance continues to grow and at present it includes over 300 members from more than 20 nations who are driving towards a common goal. Since the history of Wi-Fi till the present times, the uses of this wireless technology have become manifold. Wi-Fi technology continues to spread out in business organizations, homes, and public hotspots.

Today all wireless devices have to pass through the rigorous tests and Wi-Fi certification process conducted by Wi-Fi Alliance. More new breakthrough applications have been discovered since the history of Wi-Fi technology. Due to its easy and fast connectivity many are opting for Wi-Fi as a better alternative to wired LAN networks. Wi-Fi history shows that technology is evolving and there are more innovations in the process which will change the way the world connects.
