Wi-Fi Alliance |
|
|
An important milestone in the history of communication, the local area network that uses high frequency radio signals to transmit and receive data covering distances of a few hundred feet is known as Wi-Fi technology. The technology of Wi-Fi works on the wireless networking standards based on IEEE 802.11, whatever the end technical result is. As a technology, Wi-Fi found its origin in the year 1997, and since then the technology, has gone through several phases of development. The wireless technology brand owned by the Wi-Fi Alliance which helps in enhancing the interoperability of wireless local area network is basically known as Wi-Fi.

The Wi-Fi Alliance is a joint venture of many separate and independent companies, which have agreed to make use of a set of common interoperable products based on the set of IEEE 802.11 standards. While all 802.11a/b/g products are, erroneously called Wi-Fi, the products that have cleared the Wi-Fi Alliance testing only, are allowed to call their products as "Wi-Fi Certified". At first Wi-Fi was used only to keep computers connected to one another, the technology was later deployed in keeping an Internet connection amongst all workers, involving a greater area.
Origin of the Wi-Fi Alliance: In the year 1999, several industry leaders came together to form a global, non-profit organization, with the objective of adopting a single worldwide-accepted standard for high-speed wireless local area networking. This unique trailblazing effort in the ambit of communication technology is known as the the Wi-Fi Alliance. In the present date, Wi-Fi Alliance encompasses more than 20 countries across the world and comprises of more than 300 members. This corporate group was earlier christened as the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance or WECA, but changed its name in the year of 2002 , in the month of October. The reason to get rechristened, was to articulate the Wi-Fi brand better, thereby ushering a good brand building. The headquarters of the Wi-Fi Alliance is based in the city of Austin in the state of Texas.
Function of the Wi-Fi Alliance: The trade group owning the Wi-Fi brand, is an important body in the ambit of wireless technology. Apart fro providing interoperability networks in the world of wireless computer networking, the Wi-Fi Alliance also owns and controls the Wi-Fi certified logo, a registered trademark, which is permitted only on those equipments, which are cleared through the tests of the organization. The main tenets of the Wi-Fi Alliance, which is an autonomous body is to provide certification of the interoperability of products, to promote the Wi-Fi technology and to perform testing.
Members of the Wi-Fi Alliance: The list is endless, and includes companies like SONY,Intel,Nokia, DELL, Texas Instruments, CISCO, HCL, just to name a few.
