GSM

GSM is short for Global System for Mobile Communications and indeed that is exactly what this latest technology is aimed to do. It is the dominant cellular systems using the TDMA technology that allows for eight calls on the same radio frequency. The ability to use your phone in many parts of the world and the alternatives afforded by this particular mobile technology is useful to the consumers.

Origin and development of GSM
In 1982 The European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations had a vision of developing a cellular service that could be used throughout the continent of Europe. This lead to the invention of Groupe Special Mobile(GSM).
Five years later a memorandum was signed by 13 European nations to develop a common cellular service for use throughout Europe. Three years later the first phase of the technology were published. A year later saw the launch of the very first GSM network.

About GSM

This wireless network is specifically a cellular network that connects mobiles in the immediate area. The frequency of operation of this particular wireless mobile network is 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 850 MHz and 1900 MHz. The first two are the most commonly used GSM frequencies. This second generation cellular service is designed to accommodate digital radio technology. Thus a digital narrow band time division multiple access system was developed to make it compatible with the technologies developing each day. The software technicalities are defined by this wireless network, the hardware details are not specified by this technology. This allows the consumer to buy the equipment from any supplier. The network of GSM is divided into SS or switching system, BSS or base station system and OSS or the operation and support system. The cell size of GSM network is of four types; micro, macro, pico and umbrella cells. The coverage area of the cell varies according to the implementation atmosphere. Macro cell antennas are installed on high buildings, micro cells antenna is under average roof top level. These are the two types that is used in urban areas. Pico cells have a short range that is limited to a few meters and are ideally used indoors. Umbrella cells find application in bridging gaps in coverage areas and covers the shadowed region of smaller cells. GSM also has options of packet based Internet connections that can be availed according to the discretion of the user. The advantage of using global systems for mobile communication is that the user has options of utilizing cost effective and alternate methods of communications. Short Message Service is an example of such an option. To use the GSM technology the subscribers need to have Subscriber Identity module or a SIM card. The latter is a complete storage device that allows for the retention of information even after you switch off the mobile phone.

GSM is the latest technology in communication device that has provisions for the inclusion of newer and developing technologies in the same field.
